The accession consists of six reels of 16mm film, comprising six different films which were kept at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Public Information Office during the 1970's. The films are entitled FLIP, n.d.; Piquero IX, c1970; Challenging Sea: World of Oceanography, June 1970; Indopac Leg 15, 1977; SIO Aerial, 1977 and New Horizon, 1979. FLIP is a 16mm color, sound, 17 minute film documenting SIO's Floating Instrument Platform, an instrument developed by the Marine Physical Laboratory. It was produced by Gerald Schnitzer. Piquero IX is a 16mm color 45 minute film documenting SIO's Piquero Expedition of 1969 to the Peru-Chile Trench. This film shows expedition work aboard R/V Thomas Washington. Challenging Sea #527 is entitled "World of Oceanography." This is a 16mm color, sound, 26 minute film produced by NBC Enterprises and Bill Burrud which describes the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1970 and includes interviews with Ann Hartline, Carl L. Hubbs, John D. Isaacs, Frank Snodgrass and William Nierenberg. This film includes views of the Scripps campus. Indopac Leg 15 and SIO Aerials are master 16mm color film. Indopac Leg 15 depicts expedition work aboard research vessels. It was produced June 2-30, 1977 by Elizabeth Venrick. The SIO Aerial film is a few minutes of 16mm master color film dated September 1977. New Horizon is a 16mm color 10 minute film produced by the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet. The cameraman is identified as "Ballard." It includes interior and exterior images of R/V New Horizon at Point Loma in San Diego, the vessel's captain and crew. The film was made during the first year of vessel operations.
